Staying Safe Online with DateME Kenya

We take your safety very seriously at DateME Kenya by making every effort to ensure our site remains a secure, relaxed environment for you to meet other like-minded members.

Your first step should be to read our Terms & Conditions thoroughly, paying close attention to terms no. 3 and 4. Remember, YOU are responsible for all your actions and DateME Kenya will not tolerate misuse. Anyone found misusing the site will be removed immediately, with no refund given.

Staying Safe

The key to staying safe is to limit the amount of personal information you give to other members. Information like your full name, telephone number, email address, postal address, Facebook page, etc should NEVER be disclosed to other menbers. Only once you have dated someone several times and feel 100% confident with them should you even consider sharing any personal information.

With this in mind, please re-read any profile updates or messages you send to other members. It's embarrassingly easy to slip up and disclose your personal details.

If you ever feel uneasy about another member, a profile, a picture, a discussion, an event or anything to do with the site then do not hesitate to report the issue right away.

Messaging other members

Messaging and flirting can be fun and exciting, but please do not get carried away. Remember never to give anyone personal information.

Always stick to the DateME messaging system! It's safe, secure and recorded (so should anything go wrong then we can clearly see the issue and resolve it).

Although our members are personally vetted, you should be very wary if you find another member is:

  • Being dishonest with you.
  • Trying to pressurise you into a date.
  • Trying to find out your personal contact information.
  • Ignoring your questions. The site is for genuine people, so asking a few personal questions should not be a problem.
  • Inconsistent with their information (look back through your correspondence with them to check).

Blocking other members

Sometimes you may come across another member you would rather not hear from again. Blocking this member means that they will no longer be able to view your profile, message you, wink at you, or view your photos.

To block a member simply go to their profile and click the ‘block’ icon on the right hand side.

Should you wish to report them for anything then please do so, we take all issues very seriously and will do our best to resolve them as soon as possible.

Setting up new contact details

This is a dating site and after some time you’ll want to share some contact details with potential dates. We advise members to create a free email account (Gmail or Yahoo) for emails (and don't use your full name in the email address!) and use a phone number that you can easily change or some phones allow you to simply block your number from appearing on someone else's phone. Stay private until you feel 100% comfortable!

Arranging a date

After messaging and talking with someone online, the next step is to arrange a ‘date’. This could consist of one of your ‘DateME Ideas’ or just a quick meet up for a coffee/drink in a busy café. Always use your common sense, take all your usual precautions and, if it gets to the point of exchanging contact details, remember to use your new ones (see above).

When arranging a date location, make sure you are familiar with the location and you are totally happy with the choice. If someone you meet online is seriously interested in you, they will want you to feel completely safe and will be happy for you to apply a few common sense ‘rules’ when you meet.

Only arrange a date when you are 100% comfortable with the potential candidate. If you are not quite ready, then simple say this and take your time getting to know the other person better.

Things to keep in mind when dating:

  • Make sure it’s in a public place with lots of people or alternatively arrange a double date with one of your friends or with a group of friends.
  • Do not allow yourself to be anywhere secluded. Make sure there are other peaple nearby to call on should something go badly wrong.
  • Tell a friend or family member who you are meeting, where you are going and when you will be back.
  • Make your own travel arrangements. If your date offers to pick you up or drop you off, politely say no! Safety first!!
  • Stay sober. Do not drink too much, everyone should know their own limits and you should stick to them.
  • If a situation starts getting out of your control, then take the actions needed to make yourself feel in control again. Don't worry about being overly cautious, it's a good thing, and your date will understand.
  • If you are ever asked to do something you don’t want to do, then make it clear you will not do it and make sure your date understands this.
  • When out on the date make sure you keep an eye on your drink and get to know your surroundings. If you feel uneasy then move to a place you feel safe!
  • If you feel compatible then perhaps consider video Skyping each other, you will get a good idea of who they are and what they look like, all from the safety of your own home.
  • Please remember to keep your Skype chat only a chat and never feel pressured into doing anything more then just talking. Even if you know the other person, it’s unfortunately now a pretty common scam for people to record the ‘chat’ and use it to blackmail you!

Feeling uneasy

We want your time with us to be highly enjoyable. Don't lose your enjoyment through another member's actions, such as:

  • someone who seems to be dishonest or made you feel uncomfortable.
  • you receive an inappropriate message.
  • you see something inappropriate on a profile or photo.
  • someone asks you for money (helping a ‘charity’, medical/family emergency etc.).
  • someone solicits sex (prostitution is sadly a big issue across the world and also here in Kenya, anyone doing this is removed instantly. No questions asked!).
  • pressurises you into doing something you are not comfortable with.

Don't hesitate to get in touch with us either directly or by reporting the member. Each profile, picture, event and discussion has a 'Report ' option on it (looks like a mini megaphone); click on this, let us know why you are reporting it and we will act fast.

How to spot something suspicious or a SCAM!

We need you to help us keep DateME Kenya safe. Please report straight away if you encounter any of the following:

  • Profiles that are too good to be true and written in such a way that they make you think you have found your dream date, but don’t actually tell much about themselves (we do monitor the site, but still need you to be aware).
  • Anyone revealing their undying love for you after a short period, then asking for financial help.
  • Anyone telling you a sob story full of heartache and pain, perhaps about a lost partner or child who recently died in a tragic accident and they need help.
  • Anyone asking for money to put towards a charity here in Kenya or elsewhere.
  • Anyone offering you an amazing ‘business’ opportunity.
  • Anyone claiming to be ‘travelling’ and has recently been robbed, losing everything (emergency help).
  • Anyone having ‘visa’ issues and needing financial help, usually an American or western traveller.
